Since the beginning of Bagels & Beans, we have had our own selection of coffee beans with a unique Bagels & Beans flavour profile. We source these premium quality beans for our blend from coffee farmers in South America. You can taste natural love and craftsmanship in our superior coffee. To bring you the highest quality, we are keen on the best beans with the best flavour. That’s why we’ve been importing and roasting our own coffee beans since the very first cup in 1996. When it comes to coffee, don’t kid us.
The origin of our unroasted beans can be found on the sunny slopes of Peru and Guatemala. Here, small-scale farmers grow coffee plants with respect for people and the environment. Families deliver ripe, hand-picked berries to cooperatives that we buy directly from. Because of the cooperation, growers receive a fair price. They invest part of the proceeds in education, medical care and biodiversity restoration. Local communities thus ensure their own healthy living environment and are also assured of a good income in the future. Pure coffee, in other words.
Origin
Peru
Our coffee beans from Peru are grown by the Valle Verde Cooperative, located in the picturesque landscape of Rodríguez de Mendoza, in the Amazonas region. Founded in 2016, this cooperative’s main goal is to promote sustainable coffee production that respects both the environment and local people. The cooperative emphasizes the development of youth and women through improved farm management and nutrition. In addition, model farms are established to promote effective food production practices. The beans are a combination of Caturra, Mundo Novo and Costa Rica 95. All are Arabica beans.
Guatemala
These beautiful coffee beans come from some 200 small farms in the Jalapa region. This beautiful region is distinct from other growing areas in Guatemala; it has pine forests scattered throughout a mountainous landscape, full of birds and wildlife. The beans are a combination of catuai, bourbon, caturra and pache. Again, these are all Arabica beans.
The perfect blend
Every two weeks we roast a new batch of 100% Arabica beans. The medium-dark roast brings out the unique character with notes of dark chocolate, nuts and dried fruit. Our proprietary roast gives the beans a full-sweet rounded body, low acidity and invigorating tartness. This is characteristic of our Bagels & Beans premium quality blend. Because of the weather and seasons in South America, our beans take on a slightly different flavor profile each time. Because we roast our beans in the Netherlands, the beans are not only super fresh but also of consistent quality. Our test panel in the Netherlands regularly checks properties such as colour, hardness, roast and aftertaste of our blend. And our baristas are the final and all-important drop in this coffee story. These coffee whisperers put their heart and soul into your ready-to-drink espresso, heart-warming cappuccino or refreshing iced latte. That’s how you drink that true Bagels & Beans quality every time.
Collaboration & social responsibility
Coffee is about more than just quality. It is also about establishing a sustainable relationship so that development can take place in communities. For Bagels & Beans, it has been important from the beginning to take social responsibility around the sourcing and production of our beans in addition to quality. For this reason, we partner with Bocca to source and roast our beans. Bocca is a B Corp-certified organisation dedicated to various initiatives in the countries where coffee beans come from. These include investing in local communities in the areas of education, focusing on women and youth, healthcare, organic and sustainable agriculture & protection and restoration of biodiversity and the rainforest.
